About Stirling

Stirling has a long and varied history, it’s heritage goes back to 1130 where it became a Royal Burgh in 1130 by appointment from King David I.

Stirling is famous due to it being the place where William Wallace defeated the English forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, which took place during the First War of Scottish Independence on the 11th September 1297. It is this battle upon which Braveheart the movie which starred Mel Gibson is partly based on.

Stirling is also home to the famous Stirling Castle which is is located in central Stirling, atop Castle Hill, the castle dates from the early 12th century and was built upon throughout the ages, the castle is open all year round to visitors also Stirling is home to the Wallace which can be seen across the city and commemorates William Wallace, it was completed in 1869 and contains many artefacts related to William Wallace including the 5ft6 Wallace Sword.

Stirling has played host to many films and tv shows including Braveheart, the 1970′s TV series Colditz was filmed at Stirling Castle  also Monty Python and the Holy Grail which was partly filmed at Doune Castle. Doune Castle also featured in the 1997 TV drama ‘Ivanhoe’ starring Christopher Lee.

Stirling is also home to Cambuskenneth Abbey (which is pictured below) which was built in 1140 and was where Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots held his parliament in 1326 to confirm the succession of his son David II of Scotland.

Stirling is also the perfect place for art lovers, Stirling University if home to some best of Scottish 20th century art and sculptures.  It also is home to the  works by Scottish Colourist J.D. Ferguson and paintings from the Scottish Arts Council.  As well as many modern out sculptures throughout the scenic campus.

Or you could pay a  visit to the  King’s Park near the city centre.  Within the park is the grassy mound known as the King’s Knot. The area became  a royal garden in 1630. Medieval writers refer to this area Round Table, giving rise to the legend that King Arthur held his court in Stirling.
